Executing a will in self-isolation

It may be necessary for you to complete your will whilst self isolating.  Rules at different times can change. Please make sure that you read and understand the rules from gov.uk.  Ensure that you are safe and also protect your witnesses.

For a will to be legally executed you need to sign it in front of two witnesses.  The witnesses should see you sign the will and also sign and enter their details on the will. They should see each other do this too.

Some ideas about how to do this during self isolation are:

  • Through a window – friends or neighbours can see you sign the will though your window. You can then put the will on the outside window sill for the friends or neighbours to act as witnesses;
  • At distance – for example in the garden or a park. You can sign the will whilst your witnesses are distanced.  They can then approach the will once you retreat and enter their names and details;
  • From inside a car – in a similar way to the window you can sign the will whilst the witnesses look through a window. You can then put the will on the roof for the witnesses to collect and sign – whilst you stay safe in the car.

Whatever you do please make sure that your health and the health of your witnesses are put front and centre.  Please make sure that you and the witnesses all bring separate pens.
