Gifts to charity

You can leave a gift to your favourite charity if you wish to. Many charities run campaigns explaining how important gifts in wills are to them.

Around 1 in 10 wills in the UK have a gift to charity in some shape or form.  This amount is increasing year on year.

If you want to leave a gift in your will to a charity you can make a residuary gift. Gifts are typically 1% to 10%.  Alternatively you can leave a fixed amount to charity – i.e. a “legacy”.

There is some inheritance tax mitigation for estates with charitable gifts.

Please ensure you include the full name of the charity and the charity number in your gift.  This can avoid confusion and delay.  If you are unsure of these you can check the charity’s website or search the Charity Commission website.
